Putting the National Board of Review in perspective
Twenty-four hours later, the National Board of Review still has things all shook up. However, David Poland over at MCN offers his take on yesterday's announcement and places it in a different light.I'm really not so sure if the NBR will be forgotten by this time next week, as Poland implies, I'm thinking more in the middle of the road. Yes, "Dreamgirls" and "The Queen" missed big time here, but anyone who says that "Iwo Jima" is now the frontrunner for the win is clearly delusional. Is the race more wide open than we may have thought a few weeks ago? Absolutely. Does the National Board of Review really matter as much as we would like to think it does? Absolutely not.
Edward Zwick won Best Director at the NBR in 2003 for "The Last Samurai". Michael Mann in 2004 for "Collateral". Gong Li last year, and Philip Seymour Hoffman in 1999 in the supporting categories. As Poland reminds us, two of the past five Best Picture winners have missed the top ten at the NBR.
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and next Thursday will certainly offer greater insight than yesterday's announcement.
