Spirits go small, snub Breslin

Film Independent did not call Abby's name this morning.

Some fairly strange nominations coming from Film Independent today. "Little Miss Sunshine" dances to 5 nominations (co-leading with "Half Nelson"), yet the film's star, Abigail Breslin, was omitted. I don't think this effects her Oscars chances in the least, it's still quite early.

If you're wondering how "Pan's Labyrinth" scored a Best Feature nod as a foreign language film, apparently the film just barely met the criteria needed to be considered for the Spirits. Nonetheless, it is surprising to see the film grab a feature nod without a nomination for the film's director Guillermo del Toro.

Speaking of directors, it sure is nice to see Altman's inclusion, isn't it?

"Little Children", "The Queen", "The Last King of Scotland", "Venus", "The History Boys", "Borat", and "Bobby" were ineligible for the Spirits for one reason or another, so take that into consideration while scanning over the nominees.

The Spirits managed to skew much smaller than they did last year when Oscar titans "Brokeback", "Capote", "Good Night, and Good Luck." and "Crash" scored several nominations. This makes the Spirits much less interesting this year as far as the big picture is concerned, but they're still one of my favorite precursors. Plus, Sarah Silverman is hosting again this year!
