Christopher Nolan's latest looks grand

"The Prestige," starring Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman.

Christopher Nolan just continues to impress. Following his breakout "Memento," 2002's underrated "Insomnia," and last year's splendid "Batman Begins," Nolan is really starting to become one of my favorite new filmmakers.

But the
trailer for his latest film, "The Prestige," really took me by surprise. I remember reading about it last year, but just thinking of it as a "sandwich film" between the two "Batman" films. It clearly has the look of something special.

As far as Oscars go, maybe? The cast is certainly there, the director, the techs -- particularly cinematography, costume design, and art direction -- are there. Wally Pfister, photographer of all of Nolan's major films ("Prestige" included), has impressed me just as much as Nolan. His work on "The Prestige" looks as if it will be another marvelous outing.
Who knows? There's a surprise every year, and "The Prestige" looks like it could be one fine piece of work.

"The Prestige" will begin in a limited release on October 27th.
