Woman On Fire

DOMINO

I liked this. You didn't.
Based on a true story, sort of. A recounting of model-turned-bounty hunter Domino Harvey's life story. Daughter of an actor, living the Beverly Hills life wasn't for Domino. While her peers were playing with pom poms, Domino was playing with nunchucks. Not fitting in, Domino walks away from modeling to pursue a more adventerous occupation. Bounty hunting.
Recruited by Ed Mosbey (Mickey Rourke) and his sidekick, Choco (Edgar Ramirez), Domino joins their team. After that, the story explodes into a wacky thrill-ride. Crooked bondsmen, family drama, reality TV producers (Mena Suvari and Christopher Walken), and of course, "The First Ladies." The entire story is narrated by Domino and her disjointed fragments of memory as she is cooped up in an FBI interrogation.
Tony Scott employs his own style again; frantic editing, stylized cinematography, saturated colors, and charging music to the film. I've never been a big detractor of it, in fact, with Man On Fire, it actually enhanced the film. Scott goes all-out with Domino, and it's just a joy to watch -- if you can keep up with it. It's just not for everyone, as you can tell by most reviews for the film.
Keira plays against the grain here, and is really great. I do wish that Scott and writer Richard Kelly applied a bit more structure to the film. Man On Fire had structure, character investment, and an emotional arc. Domino doesn't, but it doesn't pretend that it does. It doesn't take itself seriously. It's convoluted, but completely harmless fun. It's wonderful chaos.
If you go into Domino open-minded, looking for a nice little jolt and a rowdy, uncensored, good ol' time, you might actually like it.
Or, you might not. But I did.
