Get Lost In Space

SERENITY

by Shawn Snead / October 3rd, 2005
"Firefly" only ran 15 episodes but gained a huge cult following, myself included. Joss Whedon's (creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel") short-lived series set five hundred years in the future centers around a crew of rebels aboard Serenity, an unstable transport ship lead by Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds. He is joined by his second-in-command, Zoe, her pilot husband, Wash, the muscle, Jayne, and the mechanic, Kaylee.
A year ago they rescued Simon, a doctor, and his traumatized telepathic little sister, River, from the Alliance, the mysterious universal conglomerate that governs over the galaxy. Serenity and its crew members find themselves in grave danger when the Alliance comes looking for River. An alliance operative is hot on their heels and Captain Mal is determined to find out why the Alliance is after River and what the Alliance is hiding.
Now, even if you've never seen an episode of Firefly in your life, which you probably haven't, you don't need to to see this film. Despite the sci-fi atmosphere and the 15 episode prequel, the film isn't convoluted to the average filmgoer. Joss is careful with the material and creates a very comfortable, fun atmosphere for all.
Easily, this is the most fun I've had at the movies all year. It's smart, it's witty, it's adventurous. It's better than any of the three Star Wars prequels. Joss Whedon has created a space opera that needs to be mentioned in the company of Star Wars.
